On
the sultry summer night of July 3rd, 1998, something
magical happened. The high energy variety band,
"Road Trip" (consisting of CC Hagen, Gena Urevig, Rod
Bertzyk and Ryan Wheeler) had just finished playing a
street dance to over 2,000 people in the small, rural
community of Chokio, MN.
As
fate would have it, "Road Trip" made a pit stop on
their way home and pulled into the infamous Coffee Cup
Stop. As the group aimlessly wandered the
convenience store aisles, something called out to
drummer, Ryan Wheeler.
A
cry in the night from what some might call the ugliest
doll in the history of mankind, drew his attention to
the briefcase of a traveling Vaseline salesman.
Mr. Wheeler confronted the overweight gentleman and
demanded that he open his satchel. what he
discovered inside were not only tiny, unmarked jars of
Vaseline, but also a small, brown-haired, little doll
who seemed almost lifelike. Ryan immediately
summoned band leader, CC Hagen and the two cornered
the portly man. After a heated discussion, the
little doll was bought out of servitude from the
Vaseline peddler in exchange for a single can of SPAM.
Although
her past is shrouded in mystery, a new and better life
for the unattractive doll had begun. She
traveled joyfully with the band to every smoke-filled
gig they played and became their mascot. she was
given the name, "Samurai Sally" by Ryan because of how
her hair looked when she put it up in a rubber band.
When the group disbanded, Sally remained with CC Hagen
and became not only his mascot, but also his companion
and special friend.
Her
life changed drastically when she arrived at the Lakes
Country Dinner Theater in Perham, MN (Perham, MN by
the way, is where you can live your vacation.)
In a very sad accident that no one can explain, Sally
lost her right arm when she fell into a heaping mound
of clean tuna. it is in times like these that
true friends really show their colors. Sally's
arm was put into the care of drummer, Micah Groethe,
and Sally herself spent several nights at the Steve
and Mary Lehmann house in beautiful downtown Perham.
After
her recovery, little one-armed Sally traveled to the
recording studio with CC during the making of "Where
Have All The Outlaws Gone." She merrily danced
and leaped when asked if she would like to be part of
the album. Sally sang and played kazoo on nearly
every song, but sadly none of her tracks were used
because, quite frankly, she sucks.
Sally's
adventures continue and her tales get taller with each
new piece of duct tape that holds her fragile little
body together. She looks forward to eventually
having her own column on this website. Check
back for her comments, but be patient since it is a
bit of a challenge for her typing with only one tiny
arm.
